In 2002, he was inducted into the International Clown Hall of Fame. Elwood Smooch is a Smoky Mountain comedy legend! His suspendered baggy-pants, sideways railroad conductors hat, big shoes, snaggle-toothed grin and rubber body have made him a beloved funny face-maker since he first arrived in Pigeon Forge over twenty years ago. For 12 years, this hillbilly rube spirit lost in the kingdom was Dolly Parton’s musical comedy star attraction at Dollywood. Children of all ages quickly became enchanted with the laughing magic that he weaved as he became a comedy hero to Smoky Mountain visitors from all over the country. Not only is he funny, but a powerful baritone voice is the secret surprise that left gospel music fans is awe and admiration.
In 1996, Elwood Smooch created his own show in Gatlinburg. Elwood Smooch’s Old Smoky Hoedown was an instant family theatrical hit. A combination of outstanding music, physical comedy, talented kids, fast-paced action, glorious gospel music and a Smoky Mountain All-Americana feeling has kept fans coming back for more. Ten seasons later, this must-see production has moved to Pigeon Forge, and still making friends from all over the country as the best bang for the buck entertainment show in the Smokies. The art of clowning is a serious business to Billy Baker. Billy is not only the creator of Elwood Smooch, but also the producer, director and writer to The Old Smoky Hoedown. When he was 21, he ran off and joined Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey circus, where he rose to be a featured member of their Clown Alley. He has appeared at The Grand Ole Opry and over 100 television comedy commercials as a physical comedian. He was also a featured comedy ensemble member of the legendary Hee Haw show. For a lifetime of comedy achievement this versatile entertainer was welcomed into the Clown Hall of Fame.
